Symmetry plane
I've implemented a symmetry plane for particles but met a problem with Poisson solver using Neumann boundary conditions. Please could somebody tell what in the solver could create the problem. I've change a surface flag from 8 to 12 to implement a symmetry plane in ThreeDUnstructVolMesh because OutgoPart parameter is not visible in SPIS version I have. Thank you.

comment by Jean-Francois Roussel - 30 Jun 05 04:02 PM Gennady,

I am rather surprised, since on the outside boundary, mixed Dirichlet-Neumann conditions are always in use: alpha pot + d(pot)/dn = value with usually value=0 and alpha computed to mimic a 1/r^n behavior (depending on poissonBCType global parameter, cf. doc). From these mixed Dirichlet-Neumann conditions, you simply get a pure Neumann condition by setting alpha to 0 (can be done in UI, cf. doc). So if you did things correctly, you simply changed a parameter of the solver (alpha), and the solver should still behave correctly (I'm sure it was already used with very small alpha, and I'd bet also with alpha=0).

Changing the surface flag from 8 to 12 (in the volume mesh?) is more strange. It should in principle have no effect on my side since bit 2 (the 4 in 12 = 8 + 4) is unused. But why do you do that ? To use this bit yourself to implement reflections on particles ? If you want to implement that, the logics would rather be to use the OutgoPart parameter to tag surfaces with reflections. In the current version of SPIS the command to retrieve it is (ScalSurfField) LocalParameter.extractLocalParam(Common.outgoPart).getValue();

Please, if you write something for SPIS, try to follow the general philosophy (as e.g. here using the correct UI-defined parameter "OutgoPart"), and above all, please, give back your contribution to the community ! That would also allow a better support by testing your new module.

Best regards
