Langmuir probe population selection for secondaries
null null null null null
      null
      1. that is very prone to human errors is how to sample secondaries with special instruments. Look at this dummy error :
      null
nullnullnullnullnull
Langmuir probe_id2 is not correctly initializedStacktrace: org.spis.instruments.exception.InvalidInstrumentParameterException: WARNING: Instrument Langmuir probe_id2 not initialized : population secondElec does not exist. Please choose between the 6 following possibilities : ions1 , elec1 , photoElec , secondElec True from ambiant electrons , secondElec BS from ambiant electrons , secondElec from ambiant protons , at spis.Util.Instrument.ParticleDetector.initialize(ParticleDetector.java:221) at spis.Util.Instrument.LangmuirProbe.initialize(LangmuirProbe.java:102) at spis.Util.Instrument.ParticleDetector.initialize(ParticleDetector.java:367) at org.spis.ui.simulation.view.InstrumentsEditor.apply(InstrumentsEditor.java:180) at org.spis.ui.simulation.view.NewInstrumentDialog.addInstrument(NewInstrumentDialog.java:270) at org.spis.ui.simulation.view.NewInstrumentDialog.access$300(NewInstrumentDialog.java:70) at org.spis.ui.simulation.view.NewInstrumentDialog$2.actionPerformed(NewInstrumentDialog.java:170)

… etc

The code apparently already knows which populations is allowed, so letting the user input them as a string variable is not very user-friendly. Look at this list:

ions1 , elec1 , photoElec , secondElec True from ambiant electrons , secondElec BS from ambiant electrons , secondElec from ambiant protons

some of them are abbreviated, some are not, some are plural, some are not and some are misspelled. (ambiant = ambient). The case sensitivity alone is giving me a head ache. Also, it's not immediately apparent to me if I should choose the True or BS version. (True or bullshit, as I like to call them. But I guess BS stands for backscattered or something like this)

something like a list dropdown or at least, some short hand numbering alternative would be nice.

But of course, for Langmuir probes, if you let it simultaneously sample all particles (but still seperable), it would be much simpler.

Thanks, Fredrik

comment by Sébastien Hess - 03 Jun 20 10:23 AM Hello, this is indeed an improvement that should be done in future versions. I will report it to Artenum ASAP so we can try to put it in a future maintenance contract.
comment by Fredrik Johansson - 05 Dec 15 02:58 AM Hello! Something went wrong with the formatting, sorry for that. I think the problem is clear anyway, Cheers.
